Executive Functioning
Our brains apply a certain set of skills in order to perform at an optimal level. Specifically, the frontal lobe of the brain is charged with helping us perform higher order tasks, which are also known as executive functions.
There are three areas of executive functions:
- Working memory
- Cognitive flexibility (which is also sometimes called flexible thinking)
- Inhibitory control (which includes the functions of self-control)
In our daily lives, executive function is responsible for many critical skills including:
- Organizing, planning and prioritizing tasks
- Initiating tasks and staying focused through completion
- Regulating our emotions
- Considering different points of view
- Paying attention
- Self-monitoring (which helps us keep track of what we’re doing)
A variety of debilitating disorders are associated with executive function dysfunction, including Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities as well as chronic mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.
Furthermore, individuals who have experienced traumatic circumstances – such as brain injury, fetal alcohol syndrome and toxicity from some cancer treatments – can experience challenges with executive function ability and efficacy.
Neurofeedback therapy, also called Neuromodulation therapy, trains the brain to strengthen executive function, allowing the patient to function with ease and efficiency. The process uses visual and auditory cues, which can guide the brain to perform at its best.
In our practice, we first apply qEEG technology to map out the brain so we can see where the brain is running into trouble. An individualized protocol is then developed to rectify and enhance brain function.
By strengthening executive functions, Neurofeedback therapy can improve a person’s productivity and help them to remain calm when coping with challenges or stressors in daily life.
Drug-free and pain-free, Neurofeedback therapy is safe for all ages and can be used to improve performance in school, work and even sports.
